This month, a group called The Center for Medical Progress released a hidden-camera video featuring Deborah Nucatola, senior director for medical services for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). In the video, the top doctor for national Planned Parenthood discusses the harvesting of intact baby body parts for donation to research programs as a by-product of doing abortions.

Dr. Nucatola demonstrates callous disregard for the humanity of these unborn children. For example, she admits that Planned Parenthood abortionists will alter their procedures under ultrasound direction in order to obtain intact body parts, such as heads, hearts, lungs and livers. She even talks about manipulating the bodies to provide for a feet-first presentation in order to maximize recovery of intact body parts.

It is horrifying to watch her drinking wine and eating salad while she casually talks about “crushing” the baby in ways that avoid destroying targeted organs. There can be no better example than this of the loss of respect we have developed for human life because of the legalization of abortion. It raises many ethical questions and suggests the need for investigation to determine if there is any criminal wrong-doing.

Planned Parenthood is the largest performer of abortions in the country. Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life noted: “Abortion is big business and abortionists rake in hundreds of millions of dollars each year. The abortion industry receives hundreds of millions of dollars annually from federal, state, and local taxpayers.”

Here in West Virginia, taxpayers pay for abortions in the Medicaid program. According to the West Virginia Bureau for Medical Services, in 2013, 917 abortions cost West Virginia taxpayers a total of $278,756.

One way we can prevent Planned Parenthood from employing these tactics is to prevent them from performing late-term abortions. In West Virginia, we are proud to be one of 12 states to have passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to outlaw the performance of abortions after 20 weeks when the unborn baby can feel pain.
